Digital Studio Demodern and creative agency Kolle Rebbe came together to develop a unique VR experience called “Eye to Eye” for the animal rights organization — PETA. With the help of an actor and performance capturing, the user is able to engage in a real-time dialogue with a virtual rabbit and experience the world through its eyes.

During the experience, the rabbit takes the visitor into its world, exploring five different locations, from the vast romantic field to the cramped laboratory cage. We were responsible for the entire audio conception and we made it our ultimate goal to provide the user with the most realistic and intense immersive experience possible. During the project, three vital building blocks emerged — a loop-free sound design and music concept, real sounds and instrumentation and targeted binaural/360° recordings. With the help of a number of game engines, we developed a dynamic music and sound design concept for each of the five rooms that make up the whole experience. We ensured that there was no repetition or loops in the sound and music across all of the user’s sessions, through so-called randomization and special programming.

To achieve the 100% true-to-life imaging and implementation, we recorded real animals in their natural environment for weeks. And to make the music even more unique, we found the last street organ orchestra in Germany, which filled the circus room and enhanced the user’s feeling of total immersion.

All sounds for the experience were played in 360° and mixed in 3D audio. Finally, we designed a sound-proof VR booth with live audio setup that allows the actor to guide the user live and dynamically through the experience, so that the VR experience could tour various fairs, festivals and concerts. We also developed a special system through which the actor can respond to the user in real time via microphones and various foot-controlled switches and engage in targeted dialogue with the user. The premiere of the “Eye to Eye” experience took place at the re:publica festival in 2018, where various visitors were moved to tears, and a debate on animals and their living conditions was sparked which led to real change.
